The TeamBuilding ROI Helium Hoop is a very simple team exercise to explain that uses very simple equipment. But it can be one of the most Difficult Team Building Challenges For Your Team!

One Hula Hoop per team.

Each team member gathers around the hoop and each teammate holds the hoop up with just their two index fingers pointing forward.

The goal is then to lower the hoop from your shortest teammates shoulders to that teammates knees without anyone disconnecting from the hoop with either finger at any time. If there is any disconnection, you have to start again.

It is a crazy thing that happens, as the hoop will start to rise!

The Rules of Helium Hoop

1. You must touch the hoop at all times with just the top of your index fingers.

You cannot hook your fingers around the hoop

2. You locate your starting point for the hoop.

You will use the shoulders of your shortest team member as the starting point for the hoop.

3. Your team attempts to lower the hoop without anyone disconnecting any finger at any time.

If there are any disconnections, you start over at your shoulders.

4. You can try creative solutions within the rules

You can put your hands together so they are touching if you think that will help.

Space is needed for some of these solutions making Helium Hoop the perfect addition to your list of outdoor team building games.

5. You can put a team member or two on the inside of the hoop if you think that will help.

Facilitating Helium Hoop

Helium Hoop is very easy to facilitate and is the perfect addition to your list of outdoor team building games.

You just need to watch for disconnections from the players and make them start again if you see any disconnections.

This can become difficult if you are trying to monitor more than one team, so you may want each team to elect a teammate that you will have watch one of the other teams and make them start again if they see any disconnections.

This way you can be sure a team solved it if someone from another team agrees they completed the process within the rules.

The Key to Helium Hoop is to pay attention to yourself and not try to police your teammates.

You can ask the group if anyone said anything like these phrases below during the challenge:

“You have to go quicker”

“You have to even out the hoop”

anything that starts with “You have to…”

Some of the guests will raise their hands admitting that they tried to take control of the situation and micromanage the activity. You will simply explain that this is a challenge where if you just do the best job you can without policing your neighbor, the hoop goes down much easier, and will not float away like it did when they first all touched the hoop.
